Livingston is not quaint, neat nor particularly pretty, and poverty is everywhere. The Garifuna are not warm, friendly nor particularly hospitable people. Street hustlers are ubiquitous. So why do tourists continue to make the long, difficult and dangerous trek to reach this isolated town?Perhaps visitors make the trip precisely for all these reasons. Bohemian world travelers don't come to Livingston looking for a Caribbean paradise. They come in search of the gritty edge, enchanted by the mix of sun, reggae, beach and street hustlers. You can't find this stuff back in the suburbs!
