The name alone beckons many travelers to this tropical paradise. Its derivation, which translates into English as "Island of Women," is attributed to a couple of sources. Some believe that Spanish buccaneers kept their female lovers on this tiny island while they were out plundering and pillaging and doing other manly stuff. A more likely explanation is that a Cuban slave-procuring expedition found a temple filled with clay figurines of Mayan goddesses here.
