Sitting in a valley at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Birmingham is a city filled with beautiful scenery.
Because of its rapid growth of around the late 1800s, the city was given the nickname "The Magic City.” Coal mines and the iron industry led to this massive population increase. In the 1900s, Birmingham became a hub for civil rights activity. Martin Luther King Jr. was jailed in Birmingham for speaking out against racial inequality.
