Dothan is located in southeastern Alabama near the borders of Georgia and and Florida. The community, founded in 1885 at a rail junction, is named for the biblical city of Dothan.

The town is situated in a peanut-growing region, and is the self-proclaimed peanut capital of the world. This claim is justified every October and November, as the city hosts the National Peanut Festival.
