St. Pete Beach is the southernmost of three islands along Gulf Boulevard.Perhaps the most recognizable landmark along St. Pete Beach is the Don CeSar Resort, painted bright pink and rising 10 stories above the ground. Built in 1928 for just $1.5 million, the resort has since served as a hospital, rehab center and hurricane shelter. When it faced demolition in the early 1970s because of high renovation costs, a local businessman purchased and restored the property. Today it is on the National Trust for Historical Preservation list.
