   About Fort Jefferson

Within Dry Tortugas National Park lies historic Fort Jefferson.

This six-sided fort, constructed of 6 million handmade red bricks, was built to protect the southern coastline of the United States. It also served as a lifeline of commerce to and from the Mississippi River.

The fort took more than 30 years to construct and was named after the third U.S. president, Thomas Jefferson.
