How about them Dawgs!?
Oh sure, many people would have you believe that life in Athens is centered on the University of Georgia and its beloved Bulldogs. Particularly during football season. But that would only be partially true.
To be certain, the university is important to this city in north-central Georgia. It opened way back in 1801, and it wasn't until five years later that Athens was incorporated. The inspiration for the city name came from scholarly pursuits that had occurred centuries earlier in Athens, Greece, and its own hopes for the university.
