Named for Queen Charlotte of England, wife of King George III, Charlotte is indeed "the Queen City" of North Carolina. Once considered mainly an agricultural and manufacturing center, Charlotte is now the center for many cultural venues.

The numerous cultural attractions in Charlotte include the North Carolina Dance Theater, Afro-American Cultural Center and Opera Carolina. North Carolina's first art museum, the Mint Museum of Art, also makes its home in Charlotte.
