Volgograd, in southwestern Russia, is the capital of Volgograd Oblast. Founded in 1589 as Tsaritsyn, this city was once a frontier fortress.

Today the city is a major port on the Volga River and a hub for much of the region's railways.

Among the places to see are a memorial that commemorates the battle of Stalingrad (World War II).
