India is famous for archaeological landmarks. Pre-eminent of these are the Buddhist remains at Sarnath, Sanchi and Bodh Gaya, and the cave temples at Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta. Also of note are the temple sites at Madurai, Tanjore, Abu, Bhubaneswar, Konarak and Mahabalipuram.
After China, India is the world's second most populous nation. Situated in southeastern Asia, the country is framed by China to the northeast, Pakistan to the west, Nepal and Bhutan to the north and Burma and Bangladesh to the east.
